His Wings Ranch

Making Great Progress For the Kids

Building Beds Means Building Hope

His Wings Ranch was blessed with a visit from a building crew and outreach group from Horizon Church North San Diego.  Thank you to the volunteers who built bunk beds and brought hope and healing to our community.

Northern Arizona University is coming down soon with their therapy students as well as a wheelchair specialist.  (MORE ON OUR WHEELCHAIR PROGRAM BELOW).  His Wings Ranch will be hosting them. That starts with building beds for the students to sleep in.

Builders Bud, Kevin and Tim set up a professional mobile shop. Between the three of them they have well over 100 year of experience. Michael, Ed and Cesar assisted in the effort resulting in rapid progress under the brown tent.

Each of the seven bunk beds are custom designed and built to fit the odd sized casita buildings. The team had to design the bed layouts in advance of arrival, procure lumber, then build each of the bunks on site using custom jigs and fasteners. After a key and rare piece of equipment broke they had to return to the United States to purchase a replacement tool and then come back down and complete the job.

Their persistence and hard work paid off resulting in the transformation of the casitas into comfortable living quarters for the upcoming visit by Northern Arizona State University volunteers when they arrive to volunteer at the ranch.

Community Party

Meanwhile on Saturday afternoon Pastor Steve Armendariz and Horizon volunteers Lisa, Suann, Mary, Virginia and Ed hosted a party for the His Wings Ranch community to raise the spirits of those still recovering from last months tragic news

Pastor Steve shared his testimony in front of the new youth center on the freshly poured basketball court where families gathered. The event marked a milestone in the rapid progress His Wings Ranch has made in just a few years when nothing was here but sage and cactus and chalk lines.

Miraculous Wheelchair Workshop

From afar providing wheelchairs to kids seems as easy as handing a child a chair, but a visit to our workshop would show you that it is far more nuanced. The first thing to understand is that there are different types of chairs to meet the needs of different types of challenges. Kids with upper-body strength and dexterity may be able to propel themselves in a traditional wheelchair but for many kids traditional wheelchairs are not a solution.

Many of the children have multiple challenges requiring multi-functional chairs. For example a chair may need a reclining backrests that tilt back 45 degrees to accommodate limited hip mobility and possibly a chest or shoulder harness to help with posture.  Wheelchairs may also need to be customized with detachable hardware to enable the child to get as close to a chair or bed as possible for a transfer that puts less strain on the back of the care giver.
Multi-use chairs are also equipped with a manual pushing system for the caretaker. The result can be a large and heavy chair that is difficult to fit into a car resulting in the need for a second smaller transport chair to be used when a child travels. On top of all of this complexity kids grow and their mobility requirements also change requiring even more permutations of wheelchairs.

If that’s not enough, it’s important to remember that kids benefit from moving and exploring which means also providing mobility cycles that not only engage their muscles and coordination but provide an exciting adventure.

Chairs are expensive, with some costing as much as $5,000 new. For this reason chairs and their parts are treasured, stored and reused. His Wings Ranch provides chairs free of charge but to do so required creating an entire wheelchair workshop and warehouse of donated and purchased parts to have a chance at meeting the many diverse needs.

The needs don’t stop with wheelchairs and cycles, His Wings also provides braces and walkers each custom sized to fit the limbs of a growing and healing child as well as therapeutic walkers to help kids regain their strength and mobility.  It is a daunting challenge normally accomplished with a highly funded and specialized department at a hospital. At His Wings Ranch Sue and Johnny do the work on a shoe string budget. If you are looking for a worthy cause where you can directly assist a child with basic mobility needs, partnering with His Wings Ranch is a fruitful way to leverage your financial support with volunteer ranch mechanics to put a smile on the face of a child on wheels.

How Your Donations Help

Sometimes kids draw the short straw when it comes to health and mobility. Your donation goes a long way in providing basic mobility for a child who was born with physical challenges. Sometimes all it takes is a smaller seat or part to transform a donated chair or cycle into a life changing experience for a child. If you’ve been looking for a way to partner with a small and lean organization that helps kids directly, you’ve found it with His Wings Ranch. We would love to partner with you!
